i have a '92 dodge dakota/3.9 v-6/auto/excab/2WD.

the truck has been having problems shifting out of 2nd gear-driving 50-55mph (almost red-line). after about 5 mins. on the road...it will shift into hi & then into OD. this has been going on for about 2 months. i don't drive it much. my '01 silverado is down w/trans out.

today i was driving to mys son's home-28 mis. away. after driving about 16-18 mis. there was a loud "pop". the truck momentarily lost motion. i immediately stopped accel'g when i heard the pop. i pressed the accel'r down & it kept going, but...i noticed the rpm had changed from about 2200 rpm (60 mph) to 3000 rpm (60 mph). i suspected that the OD had gone out. i drove about 3-4 more miles @ 60 mph & there was a hesitation & the truck began to lose speed. it finally quit.

i got underneath...removed the speed sensor fitting & the negative batt terminal to reset the ecm. i put everything back together. got in started it up...put into D. the truck took off for about 100 yds & quit moving again. while running-in P-i checked the trans fluid level. it was a little over the max mark-where it has been for about 2 yrs-since changing filter.

does anyone know if the problem is speed sensor related...trans related...ECM related or another problem?

What do you mean by quit? Did the engine stall out?

A500 transmission's first three gears are all hydraulic. If it isn't shifting it could have a governor issue. You'll need to swing into a transmission shop to have it diagnosed.

the engine did not stall or "quit" when i heard the "pop". actually it was more like someone had hit the hood-hard-w/a ballbat w/the shudder. the engine continued to run. i continued on down the hiway for about 4-5 miles when i heard a "power" change-when the truck lost motion-no trans power.

when i bought the truck...i encountered a similar problem-lost drive. the salesman had a mech come out & pour trans fluid-w/o measuring!-into the trans tube. after i got the truck...i changed the filter & refilled it-measuring the level. the only problem i have had w/the trans was the holding in 2nd gear for about 3-4 miles on the road before changing into 3rd/& OD.

i've been waiting for next month when my ss is direct deposited to have funds to replace the speed sensor.

would draining the fluid...as it is now-brownish red & just over max-& refilling w/new fluid help-dexron II? i found one post in another forum about a trans "front pump" failing. could it be a pump failure...since it will start up & drive a 100 yds & quit?

how easy is it to change a front pump? is it external or internal?

Speed sensor isn't going to cause a no 2-3 shift. The 2-3 shift timing is controlled by a mechanical governor. There is also a TV cable that is used to modulate shift timing and pressure. Check the cable and make sure it is operational and adjusted properly.

More than likely something failed in the transmission if you heard a pop. Transmission will probably need to come apart and inspected.

If the front pump went out, the vehicle wouldn't move in any gear.

And if you put Dextron into a Chrysler trans, even a good one will be bad in a hurry.
