tranmission Question Sign In

I have an 89' chev. suburban 4x4 that the upper gears is out. I also have a 90'chev. s-10 with a 4.3 L with an excellent trans. can I put the trans. from the s-10 into the suburban/ Or is that a stupid move? Your input would be appreciated.

Re: tranmission Question Sign In

We have a transmission expert who should be by probably with questions that I'll ask so you are ready. Have both VIN#s ready to post and any info or pertinent history to both.

90s what? If you don't know the exact model year it's trouble already. If not in the vehicle now there will be some way to find info that I don't have on it.

What item can do direct swaps is it's own software usually the salvage yards are excellent at that at least around me. With any luck at least you could find out if some of it is usable for the other?

Re: tranmission Question Sign In

If one trans is an 89 and the other a 1990, both should be 700R4 units. Question do you have both transmissions? Im thinking possibly the bell housing are different. what is the engine size on the suburban ? I actually have a 92 s-10 in the shop now i have to rebuild. Im thinking where the inspection cover goes may be different, im going to look at the trans tommorrow morning when i get to the shop(if i get there,we are having a blizzard right now) Gary

Re: tranmission Question Sign In

Hi, The 1990 s-10 is an automatic 4x4 with a 4.3L . The 1989 suburban is an automatic with a 350 cui. I have been told that a 350 can be put right in place of a 4.3L in an S-10, so that is why i wondered if it could go into the suburban. And again thankyou for your input.

Re: tranmission Question Sign In

I am looking to just changing the transmissions. The 350 in the suburban is fine, unless I have to change both.

You mention 350, these are both overdrive transmissions? Gary

Re: tranmission Question Sign In

Ok so both 700R4 Transmissions, I have a 92 700r4 on my rebuild bench now, i believe the bellhousing are different, if you look at where the inspection cover bolts to the trans, the s-10 has an aluminum cover that will have threaded holes in the bell, the other trans my have a tin inspection cover that is held on with self-tap screws, also the ends of the bell housing on the s-10 are straight and the other trans my be flared out at the ends.
But, the trans may fit because the bellhousing is alittle smaller, and you may have to drill some small holes to install the inspection cover. Are any of the transmissions out of the cars yet?Gary

Re: tranmission Question Sign In

Yes both are in the rigs. I am driving the S-10 and I have a plow on the suburban that I use to keep my road open with when it snows. I just figured it to be a good project this spring if things will jive up right. If not, I can go to a junk-yard and purchase one pretty cheap. I just figured if I had one already I would junk out the S-10. It's pretty beatup body wise.

Re: tranmission Question Sign In

When you have a chance look under both vehicles the s-10 will have an aluminum inspection plate, see what the suburban has. Gary
