got a quick question about the turbo hydromatic 400. the vacuum line that runs down and plugs into the right side, what does this do??? this tranny slips in reverse and i noticed it slip a few times in forward gears i was looking at it went to move this vacuum line and the lil rubber hose holding it on just broke right off as it was rotted so i replaced the 2 rubber hoses that were connecting the metal vacuum line to the trans and to the manifold and now i cant seem to make it slip anymore( not that i want it to) I always thought this was for your down shifting or detent i think it's called, this wouldn't make it slip would it

I doubt it can make it slip. WOT is near zero vacuum at manifold which is about the same as a full disconnect in that line. Intake manifold to trans directly should be to sense load on the engine to calulate which gear is best and when along with throttle position by cable - speed is by a mechanical centrifugal device (governer) in older stuff,

that little thing on your transmission where the vacuum line hooks to is called a vacuum modulator. it controls upshift.

I didn't think that was the problem, i talked to a guy in town and he said for $800 he could put a rebuilt one in for me and have it back to me in 3 days(rural area not that bizzy i guess) but now it suddenly stopped slipping i'm gonna go drive it and get it really hot and see what happens. rehooking that vacuum line is all i did so i imagine it should start slipping when it gets hot but i made the appointment already for Monday. this guy was recommended by the older guy at nappa and i made it clear when i asked him I'm looking for quality work not cheap work, most ppl think they are helping by giving you the cheap alternative but ive been through that b4, just cause it's cheap don't mean it's right and it's not cheap when you are stuck 100 miles from home.

boy do I feel stupid........ started it up, drove it till hot, checked the trans fluid, hmmmmm seemed to be 3 qt. low, filled it up to full while hot and running drove it through all the gears, checked the fluid and its full, drove it some more no problems drove it about 10 miles at 55 mph, no problems. so i will have the guy at the trans shop check all the pressures and all what he does and see what he thinks maybe i'll have him do a trans service and if it still moves after that than i just saved 800 bucks.......boy do i feel stupid

yea im gonna still have it checked out, the way the pan looks i would say it leaked out. it sat for 3 years b4 i got it. will find out monday when i have a trans guy look at it. when they sit for long time the seals could have dried out and cracked or who knows; the trans guy will
