saturn tranny shifting

I have a 2001 saturn s series that does not shift into top gear and lower gears it shifts very hard. Fluid level is good and has been changed recently. I can reset the service engine light but if I drive with the shift selector in drive, when it gets to top gear it revs up and goes back to the next lower gear. Is there a sensor that needs to be replaced and where is it?

Hello,
You mentioned about the check engine light, did you make note of the code stored? this is a 4 speed trans called a TAAT. Gary

The code is P0734, which "Gear 4 Incorrect Ratio".

Hello,
The p0734 would make sense since this revs out in 4th, this is not a common problem with this trans. What lead up to this, did you feel anything before it started with the problem in 4th gear? Hows reverse? Gary

This is my daughters car so I have little knowledge of the progression leading up to the loss of overdrive or the way it slams from one gear to the next. It does take about one to three seconds to get reverse.

Hello,
It probably shifts hard because of the code present, I would need you to clear the code than put it into reverse and see if your delay is still 1 to 3 seconds. After the code is cleared shut the car off for a minute then start it and see what happens in reverse. A common problem with these transmissions is delay or no reverse, but usually 4th is ok. can you get live data on your scan tool? Gary

My scan tool is simple and does not give live data. I will try to check shifting with the code cleared and also the lag in reverse.
