97 Ford Ranger 2.3L 2WD Automatic. When its cold out and the engine cold the transmition takes a few seconds to go into reverse. It sometimes popes into gear violently when trying to put it into gear right away. I replaced the trans filter, it help. Doesnt do it so much anymore untill winter hits again.

Try adding seafoam to the fluid,....sound s like there could be a valve sticking.
