My 2016 Jeep Cherokee, 6 cylinder, shifted down into a low gear while I was entering the expressway. I was shuck in traffic for 30 minutes. When the traffic began to move again, I began to accelerate. All of a sudden, the engine got loud and the rpms went up to 7 and 8 on the gauge. I pulled over to the side of the freeway and stopped. I never touched the gear shift, it's an automatic. I put it in park and then put it in Drive again. It went into the regular drive and I took off. My jeep has 854 miles only! The rpm gauge still has a bright orange warning covering the 7 and 8 rpms. I will call the dealership in the morning, but has anyone ever heard of this? I don't know anything about cars really.

Just 854 miles on this! Make a note that this happened in writing on a service check NOW. This should be 100% warranty covered unless something is damaged somehow. Make sure it's noted that it revved up to 8,000 as that's beyond what engines are designed to do which is why there's a warning area on a gauge for that. Brand new or not that alone can cause real engine damage! Again note that in writing now. Surprised it went that high without a control preventing that? Too new to know, T

Hello, This should be the Zf 8 speed transmission in this jeep, not much info is out there about this transmission, when this happened did the check engine light come on? Gary

No, the check engine light did not come on. It just wouldn't change gears and I knew right away I shouldn't be driving it with it going up to 7 and 8 rpms, so I pulled over right away, being on the expressway with a lot of cars behind me. I have read the Cherokees have transmission problems. I can't believe I am having car problems before the first car payment is due.

Again - my take on this and suggestion is that for any reason was able to rev that high - you shouldn't have to have even been confused by bizarre behavior or later blamed that it was abused if that did do harm is what I would worry about. It's not even really about cars at all. You paid for new and should expect it to behave as new. Can't be just me but I don't want something brand new all fixed up, or major issues. Being a vehicle they aren't likely to just give you another new one so just make sure it's perfect when settled, T
