lost all gears while driving down the road in 91 ford escort wagon Sign In

I was driving down the road in my 1991 ford escort wagon when the transmission went to shift from drive to overdrive the gear had slipped so I pulled over and checked my other gears and realized they were gone as well. Any ideas what it may be and what may have caused it to go? I haven't had any prior problems with the transmission.

How's the transmission fluid level and condition? Can you push the car with the transmission in park?

Not really a good way for your New Year to start off. Frown There are several things that could cause this, but regardless it appears the transmission may need to come apart which isn't a good thing. Considering the age of the vehicle and the mileage, it may need overhauling or replacement with another unit if it isn't cost effective to go through it.

First thing that should be done is to check line pressure to see if the oil pump in the transmission is even working or if some major leak inside the transmission is occurring to dump off the pressure. Without hydraulic pressure to activate components inside the transmission, you won't have any forward or reverse gears.

Could you tell me how I would go about checking the pressure in the lines to see if the pump is bad. If it is bad am I able to just replace pump or would there be other things that would need to be done at the same time?

You need a tach and a transmission pressure gauge to verify correct line pressure. There is a plug on the transmission that you screw the gauge into. Line pressure specs for that transmission is normally 53-65 psi at idle when in any forward gear and 85-107psi in reverse at idle.

Verifying pressure is just one part of the diagnostic process. If you verify that line pressure isn't within specs, that is when you have to do a tear down and do an inspection to determine what is going on.

Transmission work is a specialty and requires special tools and test equipment that most DIY don't have.
