i have a 1994 vw golf cl 1.9tdi and have been offered a 1998 vw polo 1.9 tdi.the polo has a faulty diff and i was wondering if the gearbox from the golf would fit the polo?is it a case of just swapping them over?

Well, I don't know if anyone could give you a simple yes or no, online. But, I do know that you could find out fairly easily for yourself. If you know enough about car basics and could get down and meaure the axle and all it specs, and physically compare them I'm pretty sure you could determine that way. Or, if you don't have that option, you could just call your local VW dealer, and ask them. Just tell them each vehicles year, make, model, etc., and ask what the part number and cost is for each differential, if they're the same part numbers and cost then I'm sure they're exactly the same....
