electronic shift transmission help

i have a 1996 gmc jimmy with 4.3l engine and the transmission is an electronic shift transmission. think the 4L60. 123k miles. there is delayed shifting going on. it's acting like it doesn't want to grab the higher gear. there is a slight delay in when putting it into reverse. thinking maybe some sort of sensor on or in the transmission but don't know which one. need help asap

I don't know the TSB # (Technical Service Bulletin) but I know there are TSB'S out. Check with a dealer for the TSB'S. Post any error codes that are set so they can be seen.

How is the fluid level and fluid condition?
Reverse is all mechanical and not computer controlled. If you have a delay going into reverse, there is a pressure problem inside the transmission. You'll have to connect a transmission pressure gauge up and do some line pressure checks.

condition is good. level is lower than it was n white smoke from exhaust consistant with tranny fluid burning but dont see any lines as should between the two. i don't see the shift linkage, nothing on the transmission. just a wire going to a large sensor on the side. dont see a kickback, a modulator, nothing. there are no vacuum lines going to the transmission

The transmission line pressure is controlled by an electrical solenoid called a PCS (pressure control solenoid), so there is no throttle valve cable or vacuum modulator. Can't think of any reason the engine would be burning transmission fluid. Is the white smoke coming out from the end of the exhaust pipe or is it coming from underneath the vehicle?

The end of the exhaust pipe is at the back of vehicle. Unless the muffler fell off...

The PCS is on the valve body behind the transmission pan. PCS won't cause a loss of fluid though.

The wires to the PCS solenoid come into the transmission at the electrical plug you saw on the side of the transmission. The PCS gets power and ground on the light blue/white and red/black wires at the plug.
The electrical harness inside transmission that comes from the other side of the plug that goes to the solenoid itself use a light blue and a purple wire.

okay. you'd think that would throw an engine code. when i ran the codes before, nothing showed up about the transmission. just oxygen sensor no circuit, another oxygen sensor code, multiple misfire, cylinder 4 misfire. how do i adjust the shift linkage?

If the engine has misfires and or problems, you need to correct those first. A bad running engine is going to affect the operation of the transmission. Once you have the engine problem sorted out and you find you still have a problem with the transmission is when you need to take it into a transmission shop and have them take a look at it. They might do some pressure tests and see what line pressure is at when the reverse delay is occurring. It would also be important to find out where the transmission fluid is leaking from.
