I have a 2000 Mitsubishi Eclipse Automatic. Was letting a friend use it and he said the he was driving and had to back up and when he did, he heard something clank and the car wouldnt move. the car starts and you can shift it into Drive, Reverse, whatever but the car physically will not move. Any ideas? Trying not to think about buying a new transmission til I know for sure thats what it needs.. any advice?

If you have the transmission in park, can you push the car? Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

How is the transmission fluid level and condition? Check for trouble codes stored in the PCM. You either have the F4A42 or the F4A51 transaxle. You have to determine if you have an electrical problem, a hydraulic problem, or mechanical problem. This transaxle won't go into gear if you don't have power to the solenoids or if there is a PCM command problem. If it checks out electrically, then pressure tests need to be done. There are a few ports to screw in a transmission pressure gauge to check for pressure in different parts of the transmission. If the pressure checks good to the bands and clutch actuators, then something mechanical inside broke. Probably wouldn't be a bad idea to have it towed to your local transmission shop to have it diagnosed. You really don't want to go and just replace the transaxle until you know for sure it isn't an electrical problem.
