97 ford taurus 57,000 miles on it . Was driving on freeway doing 75 had it on Cruise, was getting off at an exit tapped the brake to disengage cruise, put foot on gas and the tranny would not engage. It just whined. No noises, nothing! Pulled over turned it .off. After a few minutes i started it back up and was able to get it off the road but only in first gear. It wanted to go in drive but just jerked . It would engage in 2nd gear as well, can some one tell me what it could be? It was driving great until i took it off cruise!

How's the fluid level and what does it look like?
Your best bet would be to take it to a tranny shop and have them scan it for codes. Write down the codes and post them here.
