I have a 1985 Chevy El Camino 305 v8. With 250,000 miles. When I begin to drive off there is a bad grinding sounds coming from the transmission and also from 2-3 gear. The linkage cable leading to the transmission is very loose, and may be missing a spring or rubber piece to keep it in place but I'm not too sure. I don't know if I need a new transmission or rather it's something with the linkage cable. Thank you for the advice.

I believe that one has the 200R4 transmission...right? If you have grinding noises from the transmission itself, you have some serious issues. You should drop the pan and see if it full of metal.

The cable your talking about is the throttle valve cable that connects to the throttle cam? That cable is pretty important because if it isn't adjusted properly you could burn up the transmission. I think the cable is the least of your concerns right now if your hearing grinding noises from the transmission itself.
