I have a 2001 Ford Explorer Sport with a 2.0 engine and 114,000 miles it will not go into reverse and it wants to go forward in park and neutral? I can't even push it backwards when in reverse or neutral?

With the engine off and the transmission is in neutral, you cannot move the vehicle? Sounds like a linkage issue, either in the column or at the trans.

My 1990 Nissan P/U is doing exactly the same thing. It has just over 250k miles and the other day we were going down the road and it suddenly acted as though we were towing a freight train. 2.4l engine was straining to keep speed as though over loaded. It lasted about a minute and then went to almost normal. We smelled burnt transmission fluid smell and tranny or torq. converter now will not lock in OD like it used to. Goes forward in reverse and neutral. It would go forward in park if it were not for the locks.
Most plausable explanation I have heard yet is a seal ruptured and the tranny was trying to go in reverse and drive at the same time, causing clutches to overheat giving the burnt tranny fluid smell.
Gosh, it only has 250k miles on it. I can't belive it only lasted that long. I am gonna write a nasty letter to Nissan...
Seriously, I have always wanted a 5 speed in that thing. Looks like I have my excuse.
