Transmission won't down shift

2010 Town and Country touring, Chrysler
3.8 liter,109,000 miles.
I am not able to down shift by tapping the dash mounted gear selector to the side. Sometimes if I wiggle it a lot it will down shift but it doesn't return to drive easily. Once I had to stop and turn off the engine to get it to return to drive. I'm going on a trip to the mountains and I would really like to down shift. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks , Bill

When this happens have someone else check to see if your brake lights are working at the time.
