I'm having a problem and I'm hoping someone can give me some advise as to what I can do before I take in for service. I have a 2000 Dodge Dakota. My truck has a 6 cyclinder and has 75K miles on it. The problem I'm having is the transmission light on the dashboard has come on and won't go off. The truck is running fine, but I need to get this taken care of. I don't want to get stuck somewhere because my transmission goes out. I'm thinking of changing the transmission fluid, hoping that this will take care of the problem, but I'm not sure it this will correct this condition or not.
If anybody has any insight into this problem, it would be greatly apprecaited.

You need to get the transmission module scanned and give us the code numbers that come up. A generic code reader won't be able to access that module, it takes a professional level scan tool to be able to read it. Changing the fluid won't make that code go away.
If you haven't changed the fluid, it wouldn't be a bad idea to do so but remember that you absolutely have to use ATF+4 or you will wreck your trans in short order. The stuff runs about 7-8 bucks a quart.

Nick thanks for your feedback. I have an appointment first thing Monday morning. I was hoping I could take care of this myself, but it looks like I'll need a professional.

You can check & see if there are any codes but the only problem is any specific trannys codes will be stored in the tranny module....
If you cycle your key from the off position to the on/run position 3 times at the right time any stored codes will show up in odometer...There will probably just be a P0700 which is just a general tranny code.....It basically just lets you know there are codes stored in the TCM

Sidom, Thank you for the tip on how to get the code. I did cycle the ignition on and off three times and got the code. The light that I thought was the transmission light was actually the Check Engine Light. The code I got was P0455. It stated that I has some kind of vacuum leak in the fuel system. I took my truck in to get it checked out and they found the same code. They didn't charge me for the diagnoses. I found that the gas cap was not tightened, so that is what made the light come on. Since I had the truck in the shop, I had them change the Transmission fluid and filter. It had been 60K miles since the last service, so I think it was time.
