Transmission Problems 1996 dodge grand caravan 3.3 Sign In

i have a 96 dodge grand caravan. had it for a month with no problems. then i had to replace the etax relay. and now again 4 days after the first problem i had to trailer it home. it doesnt want to engage into any gear. it will sometimes if you keep trying but only for short periods. when this problem started it had a "belt whine" sound as well as kicking its self out of gear. in any of the drive gears it sounds and feels like there is a load being put on to tranny. but in reverse the "load" feeling goes away. i want to check everything i can befor i have to take it to a shop, solenoids and what not, im just not sure how to do that and/or if anyone has heard of these symptoms and if they found a solution.

start simple

>fluid - level - condition - chrysler uses a special ATF - no the universal type wont work

>did you check relay and fuse

> scan for codes- even if the CEL is off it should be scanned esp on a newly acquired vehicle.

Have you checked the fluid level and fluid condition? You have to check it in park with the engine running.

If fluid level is good, you either need to install another transmission or have that one rebuilt. Reverse is all mechanical and without solenoid pack control you will still have 2nd gear as default.

Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.
