Transmission Sign In

1995 Chevy pickup 4x4 5.7 engine 210,000miles. Drove truck that morning to daycare, park and then to store. There were no problems except i noticed what sounded like a vacuum hose was loose. Started vehicle to go home from store and put it into drive and I heard a sound like a rubber belt had gotten caught up in the fan. Checked and it had not. Put vehicle in drive and it would not go. Went through all of the gears and it still would not do a thing. Had one mechanic look at it and he thinks it is the trans mission after first saying it was torque converter. Second mechanic says it is the transfer case saying that the drive shaft was loose. Took drive shaft out there is no damage to it.Can shift through all gears if the engine is not on. Also can shift from 2 wheel drive to 4 wheel drive with no problem if engine is not on. If engine is on I can shift transmission through the gears but not back into park. It then sounds like the gears are grinding. Same if i try to shift from neutral into 2 or 4 wheel drive. Just wondering if it transmission or transfer case can't afford to replace both unless both need to be replaces. Before this day there were no problems with transmission. Any helpful suggestions appreciated.

Sounds like tear down and inspection time. Mechanic should check transmission line pressure to see if the transmission lost fluid pressure.

They may be able to drop the transmission pan and see if there are any hard parts laying in the bottom of the pan.

To check the transfer case it may need to be removed and the input shaft spun to see if it is still connected to the output shaft.

Sounds like a t-case to me. Your output shaft is spinning on the trans which is why you have to shut it off to go back into park. Let me know if you need a case, I saved one from my 95 Suburban when I parted it out. Not sure what the freight cost is to Memphis from WI though.

Transmission pan dropped hard parts were in there . Transmission gone.

I believe the transmission did a fine job considering the mileage. A good transmission tech should be able to overhaul that and give it many more years of service. BE SURE THEY FLUSH OR REPLACE THE TRANSMISSION COOLER AND LINES.
