Transmission Help? Sign In

Car Specs
2002
Nissan
Altima
2.5
102,000 miles

Have a quick question for you guys that I desperately need help/guidance with. I have a 02 Altima 2.5 (automatic) that I can't get to engage in gear. Here is what happened: last week went to put my car in reverse, which it went into fine, then put it into Drive which was also ok but then when I accelerated the car moved maybe a couple feet and then just stopped as if it were in neutral. I can here something just spinning (transmission trying to engage?) but nothing happening. I am able to move the shifter through the various gears but nothing is happening. Any help on maybe what I should look for or listen for or what to check would be greatly appreciated as trasmissions are not something I am all that familiar with.

Thank you for any help.

# 1 is to verify that the fluid level is correct and if not why........

Just checked the levels and everything seems to be to standard. Checked underneath the car and didn't find any evidence of leaking of any fluid.

Word has it AutoZone has an aggreement with AAMCO for complimentary diagnostics if sent by AutoZone. I'd take them up on it,

Thanks Dave. Apparently large chain stores, parts or services don't always do all the same things at all locations so anyone should ask locally...........

Re: Transmission Help? Sign In

Thanks guys for the help, but I took it to a local transmission shop and that was referred to me by a friends mechanic. Apparently one of the planetary gears hooks up to the torque converter had just completly stripped out, and there was metal shards everywhere..... So as you can guess complete tranny rebuild, thank god for the warranty.
