Tranny help Sign In

I own a 1996 pontiac grand am se 3.1l v6. I went on a roadatrip and after arriving in town i noticed from a start that first gear was slipping and not engaging, so i checked the tranny fluid and it was low so i was told to put a quart in, which solved the transmission slipping. I made it all the way back home no problem (400 miles). But once i got back into town and started from a stop i noticed that it wasnt wanting to shift into second gear atall, it was sticking in first as long as i was on the gas, i would have to completley let off throttle for it to shift into second. So i took it in and had the fluid looked at again and i was told that i had way to much tranny fluid in there and that that might be the problem. So i am currently trying to siphon out some fluid, but in the time being id like to get some other opinions of whats going on. Its a 1996, automatic transaxel with 180k on it. All other gears are shifting like normal that i cant tell just from first to second is the problem. Thanks in advance.

1st - marks on dipstick are for pints not quarts.

Slipping for any reason isn't a good sign for that transmission. If you know it hasn't already been rebuilt 180K on it was a good life IMO. Leak for any reason needs to be found and fixed not just filled up.

How would you know if other gears are working if it wont get out of low/first?

BTW - You can use a suction pump down dipstick tube to remove oils/fluids on things - just don't mix up fluids,

Re: Tranny help Sign In

get a scan - especially if the CEL is off - its FREE and would be step 1 in troubleshooting.

FREE ! EASY !

Please read my whole paragraph. It will shift I just got to let All the way out of throttle. And I went and got the fluid siphoned out and it is shifting better now. Everyonce and a while it dosent want to but 80% of the time it shifts now from first to second ever since getting it siphoned out. Maybe some additives for smoother shifting now? Thanks much.

Re: Tranny help Sign In

CEL = Check Engine Light or any icon that is like that. Get codes as suggested.
It might just default to this behavior for some reason. My point is a trans that slips or ever did is self destructing exponentially fast is truly slipping. Fluid can get dark, smell burnt or not sometimes.

A very few issues can be fixed or helped with an additive but mostly any are a waste or even harmful.

It needed fluid according to you and that alone isn't normal. I suggest a transmission specialty shop take a look as to why if not obvious and a guess on life of it as a whole as it is a wearing machine of its own,
