Shifting Troubles Sign In

Hey there i got my car Satuday and it has some trouble shifting gears... it just seems like it cant disengage and engage at the right time. To get it to shift I have to let off the gas for a little bit then speed up and that doesn't even work half the time. As far as i know its only between 1st and 2nd (fastest I've gone for now)
my car is a 1998 Chevy Camaro I don't know the size but it's a v6 if that counts it has 148,000 miles on it
I haven't tried anything but Im only 16 and don't know enough to try anything I just wanted to get some tips so i can try to solve this. Any help would be greatly appreciated. If nothing else I just want to know the problem

Hi,

I think what's happening is the clutch isn't fully DISENGAGING such that it's like shifting without pushing the clutch down - somewhat.

Also believe this uses a hydraulic linkage clutch which means it has a master and slave cylinder for linkage. Any type can be an issue but these can leak or plain quit doing their job. First step if that type would be to bleed out the clutch much like you would for a brake system and most use the same fluid (DOT 3 Brake Fluid) but for the clutch. Use what it says if different.

You might just find it low and simply filling it properly may work for now but it shouldn't have gone low so there would be a problem to find.

Best to take care of this ASAP as it isn't the best on the trans to semi force shift it. What you are noticing now is getting the speed of engine in line with the speed of the gear you are leaving or entering.

Let us know any observations you have on things like how much freeplay is at top of clutch pedal if any or little response at all. Car may tend to move while clutch is to floor on level ground if it's all what I think it is.

Hydraulic linkage or not it still needs fixing. Sometimes a failure with the clutch itself can cause this too or other things but I'm betting on linkage troubles for now,

Ya - that's an important detail and difference. Automatics shift based on a few things:

Throttle position, load on engine, speed of car and engine RPMs. It may have a cable at the throttle body going to trans that's hanging up or a vacuum leak. See what more you can observe with some more testing it out and let's take it from there,

ok plenty of transmission fluid but i noticed when i drive off in First gear go to Second then go to Drive it works alot better but then after its in Drive and im at 45MPH goin on to 50MPH it has trouble again. i think i found the vaccum but i not for sure. sorry nbut i have to rush off now. thx

Now I dont know where to look for the vacuum modulator. I got a haynes repair manual but it hasnt helped at all it says nothing about vacuum modulators. This seems like the cuase to as ive recently been reading about them but i cant seem to find diagrams or anything that shows where the vacuum modulator would be . Does anyone happen to know? Again any help would be great i also found out its a 3800 V6 engine type. The fluid also seems to be clean.
