Took in my 98 Kia Sephia because the O/D OFF light was blinking and Check Engine light was on. Mechanic got in there and said it was a tranny problem. Tranny guy took off the pan and stopped because the magnets were absolutely covered in shavings (he sent a picture, they are.) He's recommending a total rebuild.

A trans rebuild is not financially an option for me at this point, plus it would run me about $2K which is what I paid for the car anyway. So -

is there anything short of a total rebuild that I can do?
and how dangerous would it be to keep driving around with the trans in such bad shape?

Thanks. And please go easy on me, I know literally almost nothing about cars.

No, there is nothing you can do with that tranny. You can either rebuild that one of biuy a good used one but that can be a gamble.

If your o/d off lite was flashing what was the code? What did you feel right before the lite started to flash?
