Overdrive off light flashes constantly on 1997 Ford Taurus Sign In

The "service engine soon" light is also on. What happens is, I start up the car, and after I get going about 3-4 miles, the "O/D off" light just blinks non stop. It is then followed by the service engine soon light. I really don't know anything about cars, so I took straight to a Ford dealership upon seeing this. I haven't heard anything back, but I am concerned that this means that the transmission has begun to die. I am clinging to a small amount of hope that this could mean an electrical problem instead, but I just have a strong feeling that it means the transmission is about to be done. The car has right at 74,000 miles on it. I haven't noticed any problems with the transmission slipping or anything, but something tells me that that O/D off light flashing is a prelude to problems that haven't begun yet, but would be coming. I do not expect good news from the dealership. Any other info on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

That means you have specific codes stored in the TCM. The engine light flashing is telling you that you also set PCM codes but they may not be as specific as the TCM codes. Have them both read but you will need a professional scan tool to access the TCM.
