Hi Folks..............Changed the fluid and filter in my 2001 Chevy Tahoes' transmission ( 5.3, LT, AWD, with tow package, 143,000 miles ) now I only have 2nd and 3rd gear. What happened ? It looks like the shifter and cable hit all locations ( four forward spaces, neutral, reverse and park ) and i do have neutral, reverse, and park in their proper locations ( on the column ) they indicate and function fine. I can shift easily to all locations, but no first and no overdrive. Any ideas ? No idea when fluid was last , or ever , changed. Thanks John

That's not uncommon when you suddenly change fluid on a vehicle with that many miles. I've seen many drive into the shop for a fluid change and never drive out. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

Check engine light on? Could be a shift solenoid or circuit problem. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

Have the computer scanned. Maybe the code(s) it is storing is related to your problem. There is a wiring harness and solenoids behind the pan, could be the difficult pan removal incident somehow damaged something in there. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

I have an 03 Sierra and had a heck of a time trying to get the pan off due to the exhaust being in the way. Once I finished up, and took it for a test drive, it didn't want to shift into overdrive. Like DS recommended, get it scanned first. It should tell you if a solenoid is bad. I got mine scanned right after it happened just to verify it was a solenoid. I dropped the pan again and could tell I jacked up the solenoid. I replaced it and it shifted fine again.
