Montana transmission problems only when hot. Sign In

Good morning:

During a recent trip I noticed a semi-loud whining noise coming from under the hood. Additionally, during down shifts as well as up shifts, the transmission shifts hard.

After some brief troubleshooting runs, the van runs great thru the gears when cool. The problem only occurs after running around 20 miles or so, give or take depending on traffic.

The computer does not register any codes (as far as I am able to check myself).

The van is currently being looked at today, however I would like a few opinions as to what the probable issue is.

Any suggestions and/or information is greatly appreciated.

Certainly check the fluidl level and color. Put some from the dipstick on white paper and it ought to look red. If it looks dark, brown or black there's trouble. Some times you can get lucky and a good fluid and filter change may buy you some time, T

The fluid level was "Full" on the dipstick. Since the van is currently in the shop, I am unable to look at the fluid color.

I am hoping that a sensor and/or soleniod is bad, rather than the entire transmission.

Inspection of the transmission is complete.

The computer indicated code 1811, which evidently indicates an internal and/or torque converter problem. The transmission will need to be overhauled at a total cost of $2300.00.

Seems steep to me - welcome to Northern Virginia!

I came across this problem in my 1990 Chevy Silverado. It was running hot because i drove for two hours and the thermostat was stuck. On my way home the transmission started shifting at high RPM then finally when i got back in town it wouldnt go past first gear. When it stalled from overheating,i let it sit for a while, and when i started it back up it ran just fine(changed the thermostat) you might just be running your vehicle hot buddy, because your coolant lines in your transmission run to your radiator(if you didn't know).
