Mitsubishi that stays in second gear, but reverse works Sign In

Hello,

I was wondering if I could get some advice on my van.

I have a 1992 Mitsubishi Expo that suddenly starting staying in second gear. When I put it in drive, it starts in second and will not go anywhere else. It's still drivable, and reverse works great but those are the only gears.

Any advice on what this can be and if it's a serious fix or a cheaper one?

Thanks in advance!
Tracy

If you can still move the shifter through all the gears normally and the transmission fluid is full, the problem is likely internal.
Which is usually not a cheap repair, but go to a transmission shop and have them road test the van for you and get their opinion as to what it may be. The longer you keep driving it the more damage you maybe causing.

I'm NOT a trans tech but I would try a couple tricks. Put a drop of the fluid (should be full as Dan said) on some white paper - it should look red - if brown or real dark it's probably game over for that trans.

Another wild shot in the dark is disconnect the battery for a minute (just neg post) and just maybe it's got some computer control that will reset. Doubt it but worth a try and like Dan said get a trans person to look at it soon. If it's not some kind of linkage problem it's likely that you will be told you need an overhaul - the techs and I agree that if you are going to have the whole thing apart just do it. Prepare for the expense. T
