Mazda B3000 (Ford Ranger) manual transmission problems. HELP! Sign In

Hi,

My Dad has a 2001 Mazda B3000 pickup (same as Ford Ranger). It has 127,000 miles and has been extremely well taken care of and driven.

Today it started making a grinding and knocking sound when you pushed the clutch in and when you let out on the clutch. When it is in gear everything is fine. It shifts fine. We suspected it was a throw out bearing, clutch and pressure plate. We drained the fluid expecting to find a host of shavings. But we found none. The new fluid didn't help with the noise

We are by no means experts on transmissions. So, if we take it somewhere to get checked out we really don't know if and what they tell us would be true. Any advice as to what the grinding and knocking noise when pressing and depressing the clutch could be? Or what we could do to further investigate the problem would be greatly appreciated. B/C my Dad now has my truck and I am stuck with my Mom's old car until we get it fixed.

Thanks,

BRC

I think your first suspicions were correct with he throw out bearing and clutch. I just don't know why you expected to find metal in the transmission since all of those parts are outside of the transmission in the bell housing.

Why wouldn't a trans shop (or any shop that does that type of work) tell you what the problem with your truck was? Seems like that would be the best place to find out what the problem is....

Thanks so much for the reply. Call it a miracle. I went to move the truck today and didn't notice any noise or problems. Drove it all over town and gave it heck to make it try and produce the sounds and problems. But it ran like a sewing machine. I don't know if something got stuck and changing the oil and letting it set overnight freed it up. Is that possible? Hope it continues to work.

Thanks again.

Thanks for the reply.

I was suggesting that they may charge us for things that were not really wrong with it. To nickle and dime us, since we didn't know anything about it. It is happened to us before. Shops said they did service on something and come to find out they didn't actually perform the service and still charged us for it.

Thanks again.

BRC - Don't be so afraid of the shops out there. Most are not up to any games or tricks. Most could give you X amount of time for an opinion on what they think or are pretty sure of and you decide if you want to do it or let them.

Right now if there are no symptoms it's hopeless to diagnose what it was if perfect right now. If it returns think about that as this isn't the most difficult for clutch issues as things go and decide from there. Again, for now just wait and if it never comes back it may remain a mystery??
