Mazda 2003 626 transmission issue

Mazda 2003 626 transmission issue

2003 Mazda 626 4clndr 167k miles Auto transmission. the past 2 days the cars fails to move forward in the drive position right away after sitting all night, but once the car completely warms up it operates fine. Same thing occurs after sitting all day while I'm working, but when it warms up it operates without issue.
Fluid level is good, fluid is clean and no "burnt" smell, nor signs of metallic particles. How do I go about diagnosing? Is it likely a transmission band issue? If so, can they be adjusted or have to be replaced? Could it be a sensor issue? Help....

167K if original IMO trans owes you nothing anymore. There may be something stored for a code on this OR plain oil trans fluid and perhaps just old can't pump the ATF well cold.
At some point you are rolling the dice if just age and wear to change fluid out completely could either help or kill it if neglected for ages.....

As Tom said, 167k is a decent amount of miles for that tranny. Some do last longer but many fail before that. I could be wrong but I don't think the bands in your tranny can be adjusted. Most nowadays don't have adjustments that can be made.
Seems like it would be some kind of a pressure issue. There could be some sludge or something stuck in the valve body. It's hard to diagnose transmissions at home due to the expensive equipment needed to diagnose. Your best bet is to take it to a shop who specializes in transmissions and have them scan it for codes. Although I'm no expert in transmissions, I bet it's going to have to be dropped and torn apart to be fixed. As a last resort you could try and take it in for a flush. I've heard flushing them can sometimes cause more issues but it seems you don't have much to loose right now.

Thanks for the advice...had a feeling a trip to the shop was only real option.

tcollins : As MG just said, a diagnosis with equipment costs that could curl hair along with the experience is worth a few bucks - trust me and trust MG - THE ONLY PERSON HERE that has totally redone his own automatic trans. Many full blow shops, even new car dealers don't take them on as it take room, time, the equipment etc., so just send them out even under warranty at least where I am just that the new car makers provide all their own parts.
How long do transmissions last? It varies wildly and small issues can come up not requiring an "overhaul" which will frequently be suggested if something inside needs work. There are parts that wear with use. IMO - most failures short of a bad design are from heat and working them hard and some with surprise leaks.
OK - it's a few bucks well spent and you can still decided to go with it or not from there,
