For most repairs there is always either a DIY fix or a mechanic will be able to repair components , but for Transmission problems the most common answer that you get after a diagnostic ( which mostly consists of driving around the block.. and not even taking off the pan )it :
Your transmission is not good … 4-5k or or rebuild 2,5k Laugh

My Problem :

On a 2015 - V6 Chevy camaro -6 speet automatic …. When the Car is cold, it takes about 2 seconds to shift into 1st or reverse , then when driving of and shifting into 2nd it slips and jerks ( I recorded some videos , but needless to post, because you can’t hear anything or see the jerks )

I already know it will be hard for anybody to help me out here on the forum without driving or seeing it, but maybe somebody has an idea of how to start looking for some diy fixes before blindly giving a mechanic 2k-5k .

I now that the system shifts into gear and shifts up by pressure that builds up, since there is not realy metal - scratching noise, I’m assuming that the gears should be ok and possibly something with the valve body / solenoids my be faulty !?

Mactube: Gary is the trans expert here should be by. If you would just add how many miles on this and anything you know about it's use since new + color of fluid on white paper and any odor that's unique. That's it, he should have some ideas if it's real troubles or what you can do or check, Tom

Oh yes thats right Gary …

The car has about 125k miles on it. I have done a half / transmission fluid change ( about 4 quards from the pan ) about 10k ago
The fluid was black at that time.. and quite some metal dust on the magnet, but not extrodenary smell.
Cleaned it and filled it back up with GM recommended Dextron VI and its been fine ever since… until now.

… but I did notice a noice which I assumed was coming from the rack & pinion. But really could have been coming from the transmission ( a scratch / squick kind of noice when pulling off in the morning … would only hear it when I pull of and thats it…

Car has not been driven super gentle, but also not been raced.

I will get some fluid from the pan and check the color.

What may be interesting to know is…
If the transmission has to be rebuild would thick metal shavings have to be in the pan / on magnet ?
Or can the gears be worn out / broken or anything around it and there would be no metal shavings in the pan ?

Hello,
How does this work hot, does it still have delay and slip. Have you scanned for codes?

Right getting a NEW one or drinking tee and waiting ( old German saying ) .. but thats exactly what happened..
for some reason .. thanks be to God .. the car runs fine now.. the transmission shifts as smooth as butter !

I don’t know what happened .. Is it possible that a solenoid got stuck for a while or something ??

Anyway even though the transmission seams to be find now, I did what you guys probably hate … got 1,5 quarts of Lucas transmission fix and poured it in, after I drained out about 1 quart of transmission fluid.
While I laid under the car and fill it in , I noticed that there is a small leak some where. ( See video link ) Not Sure where but could be coming from the small silver cap ( not sure what kind cap that is but the leak is very small . The little drip that you can see in the picture comes up after about 45 min after I wiped the area.

Here are the pictures of the transmission fluid on white paper-towel by the way ( with and without flash ):
( 4 quarts of the 7 quarts that it holds total are about 10k miles/ 6 months old )

I meant to add that the transmission fluid smells synthetic .. little bit like new plastic .. doesn’t smell burned at all!

.. the leak is a little bigger than I expected this morning:

If this was low on fluid, that could be the reason for delay. Has this been scanned for codes?. Gary

There is no code, it it slipped before but it stopped, now fluid is leaking from this cap .

So might be some of the seals !?

and her is a video from inside the"torque converter housing” when I take the cap off…. I’m not an expert, but every time I see a dry rusty gear, I don’t link it..
There is a drip of trans. fluid on the torque converter ..

That dry rusty gear is the flywheel, thats ok that it is like that, it bolts to the engine, the starter turns it., If you clean off the fluid does it appear again?

Ok, thanks..
Yes, when I whip of the fluid from the cap, it will build a drop within about 15 min , when the motor is still warm.

That's still residual residue. This leak will only be active when the motor is running so you have to clean it well enough inside the opening to stop the dripping and then drive the car before checking it again.

To bring this to an end … not the ideal happy end I hoped for to this post but still happy …
Used transmission for $600 plus $400 labour and no more toping of the trans. fluid once a week.

My Headline Question is answered … No hope for DIY quick transmission fixes.

I did take the valve body out of the old transmission though just in case…

Thanks for the follow-up mactube.
I'll close out this to end it. YOU may ask to have this reopened at any time.

Good luck with the new/used job and no more troubles for now with this thing,

Tom
