Hyundai I20 1.2 Ltr; Cluth jamming randomly, possibly due to heat Sign In

Hi All,

I am based out of India and I own a 4 year old Hyundai I20 1.2 litre petrol Manual shift which did about 32k so far. I bought this from a friend about 2 years ago who is reliable and didn't have any issues at the time of my purchase.

Since I bought this car, it's mostly lying in the garage due to various reasons. I do ensure that I take it out for a spin at-least once in a fort-night. This being petrol, I am not that bothered about keeping it idle.

This problem started about 6 months ago when I was on highway driving at about 50mph.

When I tried to change gear, I depressed the clutch pedal and was able to shift the gear but the pedal wont retract. It's just loose, like its hanging in there. Car doesn't move like the gear is engaged. It moved by it's own momentum. Thankfully, I was able to pull aside and after few mins, it was engaging fine.

This repeated few times before we reached our destination. I didnt realise then but i believe maintaining slow speed was the key and I was much more gentler while shifting the gears. Even then it was like its trying to get jammed but I was trying to depress it only so much that it can barely jam it again. It was like i was playing with the cluth and trying not to let it jam again. It may sound funny but at this time, i don't find a better way to put it. :)

So, my uncle takes my car to his car mechanic with some 15yrs. experience and a mechanical engineering degree under his belt. He examined the car for few mins and confirmed that its an issue with the clutch-plate wear-out.

I didn't have any reason to doubt his expertise esp. because my dad and I used this car to refine our driving skills after buying it. I got the plates replaced and was relieved that my car is reliable again!

To my horror, the problem resurfaced again, recently. My uncle with many years or driving experience couldn't even guess what the problem could be. Needless to say, I'm worried that the car might not safe to drive if it gets stalled in rush-hour traffic or on a speed-way when i'm trying to shift lanes.

Can anyone think of why this might happen? I got a mechanic now who is pretty well-regarded for engine-assembly skills. But before I approach him, I would like some guidance from you all here.

Let me know if you need any more info. to help me.

Thank you!!

Clutch disc that is worn out won't cause the clutch pedal to stick to the floor. We don't have this vehicle here in the states. Is the clutch release system hydraulic or cable operated?

I believe it is cable operated. Please advise. Does this issue sound familiar?

You stated the clutch plate was replaced. Do you mean the clutch disc or the clutch cover(pressure plate) was replaced? Was the clutch release bearing inspected to see if it was sliding on the transmission front bearing support shaft easily? If this has a ball and fork, where they inspected for wear or binding?

It is cable-operated, its confirmed now.
I believe only clutch discs were replaced. I am clueless if what you mentioned above was checked. If that's what you say, then I will go pay my mechanic one more visit.
However, do you think the clutch cable will act-up due to heat? Since my buying this car 2 years ago, I haven't got the servicing done because the engine oil looks fine and I was told there isn't much done during the regular servicing.
Do you think, its issue due to some fluid used by clutch?

If the clutch release system is cable operated, there is no fluid involved.

It may be possible you could have a clutch cable issue, but that would be something that would have to be visually inspected to see if there are any issues.

I'm surprised the clutch cover and release bearing were not replaced or checked for proper function when the transmission was removed for disc replacement.

I just checked and it looks looks like the assembly includes, discs, pressure plates and even bearing. I will get the cable checked and let you know the outcome. Thanks for the advise!

I haven't gotten this fixed yet but I believe the issue to be with either the slave cylinder or master cylinder of the hydraulic clutch. The day when I was looking for clutch cable price, i typed, "hyundai i20 clutch" in google and that returend few threads from other forums where owners had same problem with same car and model. Extensive search with detailed issue as keyword/s didnt yeild any results earlier. :) We went on few trips recently where clutch seemed to be getting hard. It was fine after letting the engine cool off a little bit. This problem is definitely surfacing when engine heats up. I am not sure when I will get this fixed/replaced (hopefully soon) but I will come back and post what fixed the issue. Thanks for the help again!

Your confusing. You stated that you confirmed it has a clutch cable and now you are talking about hydraulics. Which is it?

Re: Hyundai I20 1.2 Ltr; Cluth jamming randomly, possibly due to heat Sign In

? Which is it as DS asked? It isn't both. This 1.2 liter engine I doubt is available where most of us are so unique to it's point of destination when made making all bets off for exact details.

My guess is cable is all either frayed inside casing or welded to casing (happened once on a cable set up to me) where battery ground was so inadequate it chose that cable to use and fried it. Not a Hyundai but doesn't matter.

Take it off clutch and see if it's free or not and replace if necessary if stuck tight,

T
