How to remove inner pump gear trapped by pressed flange Sign In

Hello,

I am trying to remove the pump gear and drive shaft from an adapter on a Borg Warner Velvet Drive transmission. The problem I'm running into is what appears to be a flange pressed onto the shaft in front of the inner pump gear. The shaft has a large sun gear on the other side of the adapter so I can't pull the shaft through the adapter.

The flange is a thin metal (maybe tin). I could probably bend it off with some pliers, but I'm worried about damaging the part.

I have attached a photo to show the problem part.

Anyone know how to remove the inner drive pump gear? Thanks

Vehicle: 1969 GB
Engine: Ford Lehman Diesel, 6 cyl 120 HP
Transmission: 1969 Borg Warner Velvet Drive 71C

The picture didn't show up. I'm not sure how you tried posting it but you have to use an image hosting site and post the image code.

Can't say for sure but, from the sounds of it, the only way to remove it is by removing that flange. Before I did anything I'd see if that flange can be purchased separately. If it can be that would tell me that's how it comes off.

See if you can get that picture to show up. Before you submit your reply click on "preview post". If the picture shows up to you then you know it will show up to everyone else. After clicking "preview post", if the pic shows up, then click on "post reply".

When I rebuilt a transmission last fall I found an old man locally who rebuilt trannies for shops out of a workshop in his backyard. It was nice because I was able to take a few parts to him that were in question. I was able to find him by calling a local rebuild shop asking if they sold used tranny parts. The mechanics here helped me with 99% of it but sometimes it was tough for them when all they were getting was my explanation of things and a picture or two. I also found another tranny shop who was happy to help too. I ended finding a third tranny guy that rebuilds trannies on the side and he even drove to my house to drop by some gaskets and O-rings! He was going through my town on a Saturday morning but still. Seem like tranny rebuilders are a small group of people and they were all very happy to help and enjoyed seeing someone else attempting their first rebuild. If it comes down to it maybe call a few small shops and see if they wouldn't mind checking out the part in question.

Since no shop will be open until Tuesday maybe someone here can offer some advice if you can get that picture to show up.
