H-E-L-P! 2001 Jeep Cherokee 4WD problem... Sign In

Picking your brain!!! Need diagnostic help. I just bought a 2001 Jeep Cherokee XJ Sport last weekend and have for the past week wondered why I have been getting H-O-R-R-I-B-L-E gas mileage (I do almost all city driving). We recieved some snow here in MO, and after some trial and error, figured out the problem. My 4WD is not disengaging back into 2WD...at all, hence, bad gas mileage. At least I know the 4X4 works; right? (I actually had the wife sit in it and put it in drive while I laid next to it on the ground to check if the front driveshaft was spinning during both applications. Sure enough...) MY QUESTIONS ARE...what is the problem? Is this something I can fix on my own? If it IS, where do I start? And if it is something that I WILL have to take to a shop for, which type of shop do I take it to? A tranny shop? A reputable fix-it-all shop? Any help is GREATLY appreciated! THANKS!!!

How could you even guess at gas mileage in less than a week, city driving in snow and cold, anything would do lousy with mpg? Not sure what you were looking at for 4WD. What are the selection choices in this?

If it is full time 4 wheel drive or auto 4 wheel drive, the 4 wheel drive is engaged until approximately 20 mph. So we need to know if it had a switch to engage the 4x4 or not.

Well Tom...

-I recognized that MPG were bad when it was only getting 13.6 mpg in one inch of snow/ice and it's garaged at home as well as at work. (Whoopty-Doo).
-That and the fact that it's completely stock and the estimated mpg is between 17 and 19. 13.6 classifies as "horrible" in my book. (Duh.)
-I also came to that conclusion when I compared it to my 350-V8 94' pickup that gets 16.9 mpg taking the same route to work repeatedly. (Really?)
-After filling the tank 4 times in one week, it gave me a pretty good idea that there was a problem with fuel consumption. (Hmmm...bad gas mileage? You're kidding!)

-OH, and lest we forget blocking it up in the garage and having my wife operate to see if the front wheels were pulling (and they were).

As it all turns out, it was the linkage that was way out of whack and not letting the transfer case re-engage 2WD. Fixed it myself.

Anyway, thank you SO much Tom for T-R-Y-I-N-G to make me look and feel stupid. Until your smart-@$$ response to my post, I valued your opinion in correspondence to other inquiries. Yet, after this bit of communication, I have come to the realization that you're just another jerk.

Thanks for the reply "way2old". I did some more trouble-shooting and discovered that the linkage had gone out of whack somehow and fixed the problem. Thanks for responding politely.

There is no need to respond to Tom in that manner. Unless we have any information on the problem, we are just as lost as you. As far as fuel mileage, we do not know want it normally gets so we can not answer that question for you. You also never stated what the mileage was for us to have a point to start. Horrible can be anywhere in the range. We have vehicles that range from 60 mpg to 5 mpg. So where would the horrible fall in place if I did not tell you what the average was on the vehicle? You did not state what the average mileage is for that vehicle. Since you just purchased it, you had no idea either. You compared it to another vehicle that has nothing to do with the vehicle you are asking about. Using the estimated MPG is just an estimate and can vary a lot from what is published. We are here to try to help and I don't think Tom said anything wrong in his post. Maybe you read something into his post that I did not see. So please refrain from flaming anyone on the forum. We really want to help. Thanks for using the forum and I hope you continue to use us.

You have NO IDEA who you are calling a smart A$$. If you had 1/2 the knowledge Tom G does you may be able to fix your car yourself! Your B/S rermarks are not welcome here. Read the guidelines about how to post in here for us to help you, and don't guess at things you really know nothing about. Take your MPG, get some gosh darn respect and never return to this place of great mechanics again. Go to wikipedia and figure it out for yourself. Your lucky you even got a response from Tom G.

Sorry W2O Unsure
