My Ford shifter (steering column) started feeling loose, until it had enough play in it that it lost park, I would have to leave it in neutral with the brake on. You can feel that it its not pushing high enough to catch park before the lever hits the side of the housing. Now the truck is stuck in drive, and the shifter is completely loose. You can pull it one way or the other and it doesnt catch any gears. I have taken the housing off and I can see that the mechanism that pulls the cable when you shift is broken. I have tried to find this part on common auto parts sites, but I guess I don't know the proper name. I have the book on the truck, but can't find what I'm looking for. Does the airbag need to be disconnected to get to the mechanism? It seems like it does to me, but I'm not sure. The book
shows everything with the airbag already removed.

Is the shift tube broken?

You don't have to remove the steering wheel to replace the shift tube. You just need to drop the steering column down. They sell a shift tube kit.

Also look at the bottom of the shift bracket at the base of the steering column. If the 2 little bolts are loose, it will cause the same thing.

The bolts aren't loose but I think you are right on the shift tube, I didn't know what to call it. Will try replacing that and let you know. I found the steps to replace it, it looks managable.
