Dead transmition/rebuild modification Sign In

I have recently blown the tranny in my:
'89 GMC Jimmy 350 4WD Automatic.
I need the help of someone who can tell me if I can modify it as I rebuild it.
I would like to know if I can install a torque converter locker and an auto/manual shift conversion kit
into it in combination, or if I have to select one modification over the other. And or if there is an option
to instal a tranny with 5 speeds or an overdrive verssion for my truck.
The truck as is has been lifted 8", and is running 30" tires. This configuration requires a tremendious
amount of torque to get her rolling, and has less than satisfactory fuel economy. I am looking for a solution or at least
a partial one, in the tranny while have it out, hoping not to have to change the gears in thd differentials also. But that
will have to be adressed some other time.
Thanks in advance for your answers.

Is that correct and not a typo that you're running 30" tires with 8" of lift? A 30"tire is about the same size that came stock. You wouldn't have to lift it to bolt them up. But if you are indeed running taller than stock tires over 30", you do need to change the differential gears or you will have a sluggish gutless truck that will fry trannies like crazy.

the tire size is: 35x12.50R20. but at the moment that is inconsequetial, as i said that I willl adderss that issue in my next upgrade. I am moving soon and need this truck to be a driver to accomplish the task at hand. I have no way of moving it otheerwise. Let's concentrate on the tranny issue for now and, if you have a sugestion for the gearing for the differentials I will start my search for them in a day or two.
Thank you for your input.

Re: Dead transmition/rebuild modification Sign In

There is a lot of information on the internet on how to modify and beef up the 700R4. Google it.

The most important thing on the 700R4 is the throttle valve cable. If the cable isn't adjusted properly, it will smoke the clutches.

A lock up kit would be used if you stuck the transmission into a vehicle that doesn't have the capability of controlling the TCC solenoid.

I suggest that you install an external cooler that has built on electric fan in series with the radiator's internal cooler. Put it in a place where it can't get packed full of mud. When your off road in the mud or going slow the extra cooling will protect the transmission in high load situations. You could also install a transmission temperature gauge to make sure the transmission fluid isn't overheating.

Most important, flush out the radiator cooler and lines or replace the radiator before installing your freshly overhauled transmission. You don't want garbage from the cooler trashing your work.

Its not inconsequential. Its most likely the reason you fried this trans. The next one won't last long. It you choose to not change the gearing you will spend a lot more on trans after trans with no performance and terrible gas mileage. Lifting a vehicle to accept bigger tires costs a lot more than just a lift and the tires. You either pay it up front doing it right with matching gears, speedo adjustments, etc. or you pay in gasoline and transmissions. You'll notice the guys who are out there wheeling reliably and with power have invested wisely. You can regear this truck for what the trans cost you. There is no sense in building a "heavy duty" trans since you will just blow it up anyway on stock gears.

If you think I'm lying, slap a trans in it and drive for a while. Prove me wrong. I've made plenty of money changing transmissions for people who ignored that advice.

If you think I'm wrong, get a subscription to pretty much any off-road magazine out there and read it. They will all tell you what I am telling you.
