I installed a new cv axle assembly in my 2004 Pontiac sunfire. Went to move the car, the car moved a few feet then the axle popped out and dumped the transmission fluid on the driveway. I would say clearly I did not have it pushed in all the way which leaves my question as follows:

1- How can I ensure the axle is pushed into the transmission properly and snapped into place?

2- Is there a way I can still get it seated in without taking off the axle nut again, saving me the trouble of renting an axle nut socket kit again?

Car is a 2.2L GM ecotec, 5 speed manual, same setup as many other GM cars.

Without removing the axle nut............ no

You will probably have the remove the axle out of the knuckle altogether to drive it into place using a block of wood and a heavy hammer.

Got the axle nut kit and disassembled everything, hammered the axle in place with a hammer and piece of wood. It nicely clicked into place. Problem solved.

That's good. I will close this now as solved.
