i have a 99 suburban, 153,000 miles, original tranny as far as i know, went on a trip this past weekend pulling my 2 horse trailer, ran great until we started back, then all of a sudden tranny started jumping in and out of gear, pulled over, checked fluid level, was 3 quarts low, added 3 quarts, started out again and had no 3rd and 4th gear. 1st and 2nd gear work fine as well as reverse. tranny never made any noise, still doesn't. ended up having it towed 150 miles back home. any ideas ? could it be a shift solenoid or something? thanks

bruce; Sounds like it's history for the trans. Where did the fluid go? Any external leaks? I'm assuming by you saying 4th gear that you were towing while in OD? Too late, now, but always take it out of OD when towing.

yes, i was towing a horse trailer, i have never had problems towing in OD before, i have a dodge ram pickup and i always leave it in OD when i tow, it doesn't seem to make a difference, but then again, maybe my dodge is a better truck, ya think? anyway, yea your right, too late now, i just don't want it happening again i sent the truck to a guy i know, tranny specialist, he is gong to look at it for me and tell me if he can do anything with it, if not, i told him i would go buy one from a guy i know who rebuilds them, then he wants to put a cooler on my truck for me, think that is a good idea? i do. thanks.

As you may notice, I have a Dodge, also. Should never tow in OD regardless of the make. btw, I learned a while back, that Dodge transmissions don't lubricate while in Park. Any extended idling should be done in gear, or at least, neutral. Trans. coolers are a good idea, just don't want to install one too large. The trans. needs to reach temperature. A reputable trans. shop should be able to suggest the correct size for your application.

thanks loren, i think the guy that has my truck, i can trust, so i will let him put the cooler on. i didn't know about dodges not cooloing in park, thanks for the info, from now on, i will only tow in 3rd gear, someone has told me that i probably lost the clutchews for 3rd and 4th gear, so i am going to just put a used tranny in it. thanks again and i hope you didn'y think i was being rude, didn't mean to.
