99 honda civic had a code improper gear ratio Sign In

99 Honda civic ex with 172,000 miles and the original AT. would be slow to move from park, after a few it will gain speed and then shift in to all gears. it had a code that read improper gear ratio and i cleared it, then drove the car again after checking the fluid and was fine. it still did the same but not as bad when i shift manually it dose well. After that i put the car on jack stands and unplugged the speed sensor an, pulled it out. very little debris on the magnet, cleaned it and put it back in started the car and put it in gear it seem to shift fine by it self but found that driver side wheel or hub bearing was bad. could that be the only problem? As the code has not came back on yet.

What was the trouble code number? What is wrong with the hub bearing? Hub bearing shouldn't cause an improper gear ratio code.

You sure it isn't a P0730?

Are there any other codes besides the one you got?

That's probably it. And no that was the only one. As I said I cleared the code and it has not come back yet. when in drive4 it acts like the brake is on till you get moving. If you manually shift it moves better

The next step is to check 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th clutch pressures to see if they are within specifications. It is either a computer, wiring, solenoid(s), or internal transmission problem. A transmission shop should be able to diagnose the problem.

Re: 99 honda civic had a code improper gear ratio Sign In

would the vss have any thing to do with it? i found this.
P0730 Description
This diagnosis monitors actual gear position by checking the torque converter slip ratio calculated by Transmission Control Module (TCM) as follows:
Torque converter slip ratio = A x C/B
A: Output shaft revolution signal from speed sensor (revolution sensor)
B: Engine speed signal from Engine Control Module (ECM)
C: Gear ratio determined as gear position which TCM supposes
If the actual gear position is higher than the position supposed by TCM, the slip ratio will be more than normal. In case the ratio exceeds the specified value, TCM judges this diagnosis malfunction.

Re: 99 honda civic had a code improper gear ratio Sign In

More than likely no. If the VSS goes out, you won't have a speedo and you'll get a P0500 code. Nice description of how the PCM calculates the gear ratio.

If the PCM has commanded a certain gear, it expects to see a certain gear ratio calculated from the speed sensors' signals. If the PCM commands a combination of solenoids to change gears and it sees a gear ratio other than what it expects to see, it flags that p0730 code. The PCM has no way of knowing how the internal parts of the transmission are functioning. Either the PCM commanded a shift and the solenoid(s) didn't work properly or you have a component inside the transaxle failing. A transmission specialist should be able to figure it out.

What was the problem that you found that led to a transmission replacement?
