98 saturn transmission wont shift correctly Sign In

So about a week ago my 98 Saturn sc2? (4 door dual overhead) 1.9L. w/ TAAT transmission started to jerk and jerk HARD. three nights ago I changed trany fluid and filter. It started to drive smooth until the car warmed up [aprox. 10mins idle (because it's winter) and 15 mins driving] then it will shift from 1st to 2nd after reving up, but second to third finds me in 1st gear and Im doing 30mph at 5k rpms... so I took it to auto zone for a diagnostic they read: p0741, p0733, p0732, p0731, and p0734. p0741 caught my attention and felt like the most likely cause seeing as an electrical failure of some sort was my first guess. I went through the motions pulled the valve body off and my gears ( that I could see) where pretty looking gears with minor chips on the teeth. probably from wear and tear of the 197,000 miles on the car. but i dissassmbled the valve body and checked the solenoids. 1,2,3,4 and 5 read out on an ohm meter set at 200 at 4.5 4.7 4.6 4.6 and 10.7 I changed number 5 seeing as it was out of specs even though I set out to change number three, the TCC. so after this I cleaned the gasket off reassembled the valve body changed the gasket under the body and above it to the pan. sewed the car back up started the car, let it warm up, went through the gears slowly, checked the fluid ( it was fine ) went for a test drive and it was tougher than before. I gave it a half a mile more thinking it was just trying to relearn or something [don't ask] and still no improvement. I disassembled again. this time changing the TCC solenoid. Again changed the gaskets because i have already come this far. then it worked fine for about 3 miles. It then decided to go back to it's old ways. I know this is probably more than you need but i don't care about my bone head mistakes and would like an accurate idea. I only went though this trouble because everybody in town will give me a "good deal" on a new/used transmission without even looking under the hood. I'm starting to feel like this is all the ecm or something leading to the tranny. but i cant find the names of the sensors to replace them, again nobody in this town wants to even diagnostic it.

replaced gaskets and 2 solenoids

Clear your trouble codes out of the PCM and see which ones come back. If those codes come back, let us know.

The codes P0731-P0734 mean that the PCM is seeing that slipping is going on in 1st,2nd, 3rd, and 4th gears. The PCM will command high line pressure thinking it is protecting the transaxle. The PCM knows if a component is slipping by watching the turbine speed sensor and vehicle speed sensor signals. The PCM has a look up table (LUT) in memory that it uses to compare the signals to determine which gear the transaxle is actually in and to determine if something is slipping.

First thing it to check line pressure with a transmission pressure gauge. There temperature sensor near the oil filter on the front of the transmission that you unscrew and screw a pressure gauge in it's place.

Another thing that you need to do is find someone with a enhanced scan tool that can look at transmission data. Things like turbine speed sensor, vehicle speed sensor signal needs to be monitored to make sure they are putting out the correct signals and make sure the signals aren't corrupted.

Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

Thank you for you response. The PCM codes where cleared and nothing came back up. So I thought what I did worked. BUT, tonight when I came home and parked in the drive way I remember I forgot something to get at the grocery store, put the car in reverse and ...nothing, nothing but a revved up engine. up until then it ran like a dream for two days still shifting a bit rough but not nearly as harsh as before. I have every other gear except reverse. again thank you for your help

No reverse and no 2nd are notoriously often caused by the input shaft nut coming loose, there are air check tests and what not to check that fluid passage but it is easier to just pop off the end cover and check it. You will need a 23mm 12 point socket, if it is less than 110ft lbs you will need to replace the nut and torque to 110ft lbs. Good luck!

Good job Saturn tech. Your first name wouldn't be Louie, would it?

I haven't forgotten about you guys; I bought a 1/2" 23mm 12point mine was missing. (dad??) Since I am a machinist, I'm gonna turn it down (thin wall) tomorrow when I get the chance. I'm almost positive in fact I will bet a new transmission (cause that's gonna be the outcome sooner or latter if I don't figure this out) that the whining noise I'm hearing is my clutch pack spinning a nice pretty ring onto my cover.. any way thanks for your help and I will, again, let you know so as to to help others.... this site rocks!!!
