Hello all -
My vehicle:
- 1998
- Chevrolet
- Express 1500 Custom Van
- 5.7 L V8
- 237,000 miles
My wife's van had zero symptoms of transmission issues before it quit working last week. She parked it and when she got in to leave, there was no reverse. She said there was a "whine" when she put it in Reverse and it wouldn't engage, so she drove forward through an alley and limped it home.
I drove it and noticed that if you get it above 20 mph and let off of the accelerator, it will shift into Drive/Overdrive. It will also drive in all gears from 1-4 when shifting manually, with no slipping, but will only change gears from 1st to 4th/OD when it's above 20 mph and you let off of the accelerator. It will not move at all in the reverse gear selection.
I dropped the pan yesterday and there were no metal chunks or debris or any tell-tale signs of failure in the pan or on the magnet. I replaced both solenoids, thoroughly cleaned the pan, put in a new filter, fresh fluid and pan gasket and ran it for 20 - 25 minutes to fill the new filter. I then topped it off and ran it again for ten minutes. I drove it around the block and still, no reverse and it still jumps 2nd and 3rd and goes right into OD.
All indications point to an internal part failure, but there were no tell-tale signs of failure...no slipping, no noise and no debris in the pan. She turned it off working, got back in and it wasn't working. I also checked the fuse in the fuse block and it's good.
Is there something more to check or test, or am I now to the point of replacing/rebuilding the tranny?

We have a transmission expert that comes in here. I'll take a shot.
Usually, if there is no reverse, the reverse clutch pack is done, but you pulled the pan and didn't see any issues, such as tons of friction material. Could be an issue with the valve body (gasket blown out), but either way the transmission is going to need to be gone through with that kind of mileage.
Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

Hello,
If you have no reverse and missing some foward gears in drive, the drive shell either stripped or broke. The result of the drive shell going bad is no 2nd, no 4th and no reverse. Gary sorry for late reply, shop is packed............long days
