97 z71 shifting problems Sign In

Im thinkin about buying one of my buddies 97 z71, he put a new transmission, neutral safety switch and transfer case in it himself. He said it drives fine in reverse but when you put it in drive it goes straight to forth gear. He didnt know what he was doing so he just matched the wire colors. Could him puttin them together wrong cause it to drive like this or somethin else? I really need feedback because i want this truck. If it could be somethin else would it be major and expensive or something little? Thanks.

Match the wire colors? This don't sound good.

That is a problem because he is getting rid of it and it isn't working right. That means your going to have to deal with his nightmare or headache if you buy it. There is no telling if this "new" transmission is going to work, so your kind of gambling. There is no way for us to give you an idea what is wrong with it or how much it would cost to fix it without diagnosing the problem it has. If you can get it dirt cheap and you have the money to cover the expense of repair, it could be worth it.

Like i said it drives fine in reverse and goes straight to fourth. Is there anyway wiring it up wrong could cause that? Just to get that out of the way. I dont know motors or transmission stuff, he also only wants 1000 for it cause he got a 012 ford

If it is wired up wrong that would cause shifting and line pressure issues, blown fuses, and the check engine light to come on. Wired up wrong can also mean damaged PCM drivers (which are electrical switches inside the engine computer) and who knows what else. Then you have to wonder if the transmission is going to work properly if it is wired up correctly and all the electrical functions check out. Now if you don't mind driving around town in reverse, you might be getting a good deal. If you could troubleshoot and repair it yourself and not have to spend a lot of money on parts, it would be worth it.

What you could do is ask your GF's dad or one of his mechanics to have a look at the truck. Let them check it out and see if it is worth your money and time.
