The transfer case on my 97 Jimmy 198,000 miles makes a loud gear noise in 2 wheel drive like something is turning in the transfer case that shouldn't. If I switch to 4 wheel drive and back to 2 wheel drive the noise goes away. Any suggestions on trouble shooting this?

Can you record a video of the noise and upload it onto a video hosting site then paste the link in here? Maybe hearing the noise may give us some clues.

I know that is not a lot to go on regarding a gear noise, although it does sound like something started turning real fast, a whining noise that is coming from the transfer case or differential. The problem is an intermitted problem. I have had it go over a month without making the noise. Sometimes it will do it several times during a single trip. I'll see if I can record it with my cell phone. I'm not sure how that will work. Any thoughts would be helpful. Thanks Mike
