If I switch to 4 wheel drive and back to 2 wheel drive the noise goes away. Any suggestions on trouble shooting this? Maybe hearing the noise may give us some clues. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved. Michael W New User May 8, 2013, 3:18 PM Post #3 of 3 (1404 views) Re: 97 Jimmy Transfer Case seems to be engaging on it's own Sign In I know that is not a lot to go on regarding a gear noise, although it does sound like something started turning real fast, a whining noise that is coming from the transfer case or differential. The problem is an intermitted problem. I have had it go over a month without making the noise. Sometimes it will do it several times during a single trip. I'll see if I can record it with my cell phone. I'm not sure how that will work. Any thoughts would be helpful.
