96 saab 900ng 2.0 transmission severe noise in park and neutral! Sign In

Hi, Can anyone tell me whether my beloved Saab (150k miles) is now destined for the big scrapheap in the sky!. A few days ago my ignition switch developed a problem, the sprung return from ST to ON stopped springing back and so had to return it to ON physically, so in order for me to investigate the Switch i attempted to remove the centre/rear Consoles to gain access to the Switch but the Centre one didn't have enough clearance without moving the shift lever from park to neutral, which i had to start the engine, when i went from park into neutral a really loud noise happened, it was like metalic cogs grinding, so i moved the shift into reverse and noise went but when i got it into park the noise happened again. The transmission has never been a problem until now and it seems a bit of a coincidence that it should happen at the same time as i had all the Console half removed. I'd really appreciate it if anyone could give me any idea of what is causing this noise please.

No, you didn't have to start the engine.

We have a trans expert in this section (gsferraro). He is pretty busy but will be along when he can.

Hello, In Park and Neutral the Input drum is turning when you select drive or reverse the drum stops turning. with the car running in park, that would eliminate a diff noise, it's not turning. Question, the car holds in park? does it drive forward and does it have reverse? Also, the main cases do go bad on this transmission. Transmission is called 50-40LE

Hello, thanks for the reply. In answer to your question does it hold in park etc? it holds in park( with engine off ) but as for moving forward or back i really don't want to see if it will because i really don't want to risk doing damage to the transmission, as for the main causes i just find it such a coincidence that this problem should arise now whilst i,ve got the consoles stripped down to get access to the ignition which as you probably know is connected to the transmission.

At first i was thinking park pawl hitting the park gear that would happen more when you go to select park but that also is not turning when the car is still, Have you checked the car to confirm the noise is coming from the trans?. Gary

Sorry Gary,i don't understand what you mean with "park pawl". and ,as far as i can tell, when the car isn't moving and with engine running and in park it,s not making the noise as i go through to neutral from park, it makes the noise but stops when going back into neutral but starts again when i get back into park,so for me,that noise is coming from the transmission.
