My 96 Chrysler Cirrus Suddenly Revs to 5000 rmp in drive. It is almost as if it down shifts and will not shift back up. The only way to stop it is to pull over and park it and turn it off for a few seconds and restart it. Anyone know what could cause this?

I'm going to default on this and say get this car to a shop now!! This sounds too dangerous to fool around with. Kindly hit back with what did this for the world to see, T

I second that idea. Don't play around with something like this. You could suddenly accelerate and hurt someone or worse. Get it to a shop ASAP!

The problem was all caused by a failed connection between the gas cap and the rubber hose that connects it to the gas tank. I guess the lack of pressure in the tank or something was causeing the Power Control Module (PCM) to tell the Transmission Control Module (TCM) to go into "Limp-In Transmission Mode". This is a natural reaction the car generates to prevent any further damage, BUT allows you drive the car to the nearest mechanic in 2nd gear only.
