95 toyota corolla won't reverse

1995 Toyota Corolla 1.6L with about 150k miles. I've been noticing some problems with it shifting gears lately so decided to check the trans fluid. It was pretty low actually so added some till it read ok on the dip stick. When I got back in to drive I can no longer reverse but driving is perfectly fine even better than it was actually. I just can't seem to figure out why it won't reverse, the engine will rev but nothing happens. Is it worth changing the filter out for the transmission or is it a bigger issue. Thanks

Our trans expert (gsferraro)will be along but I can say that is not going to be a fluid or filter problem.

Helo,
Transmission is A130 3 speed trans. Question, How is neutral? does the car move forward in neutral?. Quick tip on these transmissions, check your differential fluid, these leak from the axle seals. No one ever checks the fluid, there is a fill/check plug in the diff cover. Gary

I will check that also when the car is in neutral it does move forward.

Hi I'm having a problem locating the differential fill plug or bolt. I thought it'd be on the side of the transmission but can't seem to find the larger hole for the differential. Thanks for the help.

I believe I found the 17mm bolt the problem im running into now is the location is to tight to get my ratchet on it. The other problem I see is actually filling it as well since it is so tight. Any advice would be appreciated thanks!

Hah ok got the plug out the fluid level inside was fine actually dripped out alittle when I took out the plug. So I'm starting to guess its something more serious. Thabks again for any advice you might have.

Hello,
Ok, if your car moves forward in Neutral, then the forward clutch is locked together, so it is actually binding up in reverse because the forward clutch cannot release, so in reverse you have the reverse clutch applied and the forward clutch applied at the same time. Gary
Good deal on the diff, did one of these transmissions about 2 months ago because the diff fluid was never checked, wiped out the diff bearings, keep an eye on the fluid in the diff
