I have a 1994 ford tempo 4cycl automatic trans
My problem is car will not move in any gear I shift to. Not sure why but linkage is working
and car seems normal fluid is is ok and everything runs fine no noise or nothing like that
just wont work when i put into any gear. does this mean filter is bad I have not serviced since i have had car. It has 160,000 miles on it.

Hard to say if it's game over for this trans just yet. Try watching linkage actually moving underhood at trans while a helper shifts the car and see if anything looks wrong there.

Is fluid basically clear and not burned looking? Still hard to say. If pressure can't get from its pump to make things move inside it could be stuck or pump failed??

Fluid is a lite brown orange color. smells burnt if that helps.

Ok - that color is somewhat normal when overdo anyhow but isn't conclusive. If you are pretty sure the fluid is filled properly, no sudden leaks and the linkage which is mechanical is really moving parts (you could tell if it rolled some when out of park and locked again in park would be a strong clue) then it really needs a shop to diagnos it.

You can hope for something simple but I kind of doubt you'll be told anything short of an overhaul. Lot of miles on this pup - is the car overall worth a major investment in you opinion?

Some AutoZone's have agreement with AAMCO if sent by an AutoZone for a complimentary diagnosis. Worth checking out but of course getting the car there and back is a hassle too.

I can't think of anything that just unplugged or something that does this so if you don't see something obvious it'll need help,
