92 Chevy Astro Tranny part decision - wont shift Sign In

My transmission will not shift once I reach 30mph. Fluid level is good. Fluid is clean. Only 90k miles on it. Before I take it and have someone tell me the tranny is shot im going to spend the money to change a few small parts and see if it helps. I was thinking of checking the shift sensors inside the tranny pan first until my speedometer started acting up. Occasionally it will stop working for a few minutes or hours then kick back on. Ive read that is a sign of a malfunctioning Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS). Upon further reading I learned the VSS can cause all sorts of trouble, such as not allowing the transmission to shift because it is not reading the correct speed.

Should I try changing the VSS first or take the pan off and change the Shift Sensors?

1992 - unless just redone you probably would be told to go thru the whole thing. I don't really trust where I found this but the VSS can be changed without removing pan or trans and tested for OHMS @ assorted temps?? Not sure of that. It's pricey for a guess repair.

Again this could be all wrong but this is what I found on testing thing calling it wheel speed sensor also. ??

Can you get this as a whole just diagnosed then decided on what to do next?

Info sketchy on this. Engine size, AWD or not and so on.

Probably uses a cable to throttle body (would have to visually check so far) and if so see if it moves properly. If that is stuck pulled fully it would tell trans you are pedal to the metal and hang lowest gear it can allow. Concept is it would upshift by a governor as RPM is maxed out UNLESS you selected it to stay in low or it thinks that's the position it's in,

Your van should have a 700R4 in it, so it doesn't have shift solenoids. It is important to be sure the TV cable is adjusted properly, as Tom was pointing out. It does have a TCC solenoid for torque converter clutch engagement. If it isn't shifting, you probably have a sticking shift valves or the TV cable is out of adjustment or not functioning properly. You should swing into a transmission shop and have them take a look. A missing VSS signal may cause the TCC to not engage, but the transmission should still shift normally.
