Unsure ok so I have a 1986 GMC Suburban C2500 with a 454 7.4l V8 with 33,000 original miles on it the again original automatic transmission( unknown make or model) isn't shifting out of 2 nd gear easily but instead revs then jolts into 3 rd throwing you forward then back. Have talked to a transmission guy at first he said maybe the throttle cable was bad. So my husband replaced it. Still having the issue so now he's saying the kickback cable? However my problem is we have no clue where to look for it. My husband and I are both unemployed so we can't afford to take it in to a shop. If anyone knows the location of this cable I could really use the help and if you know how difficult it is to replace... thank you in advance

Tried to look it up as a kickdown cable or TV cable. Showed a carbed engine so it would attach where the throttle cable also attaches but a separate item that goes to trans basically telling it throttle position. If that broke in such a way that it thought gas pedal was floored it wouldn't upshift on time and downshift very early.

Look for it at carb then see it move at trans even with engine off should be informative. That's a very late carbed engine so quite unsure of how this function is controlled,

Which transmission? 700r4, THM350C, or THM400?

The 350C and 400 are vacuum modulated to control line pressure under various engine loads. The kick down cable is used on the 350C and the 400 uses a solenoid and a detent switch on the gas pedal instead of a kick down cable.

The 700R4 has a TV cable only that is used to modulate line pressure.

I'm guessing you have the 400 because you can't find a cable going down to the transmission.

I'm not sure what transmission I have the tranny guy I spoke to stopped by my husbands one day job site and looked under the hood and said the throttle cable had snapped... but when we replaced it it was still whole a little to flexible and starting to fray but relatively whole my husband is thinking he might have seen the kickback cable or as he called it the tv cable... just not sure neither my husband or I have ever worked on anything to do with trannys or its outlying parts...

If the throttle cable had snapped, nothing would happen when you pressed on the accelerator. The throttle cable goes from the engine to the gas pedal.

You really need to identify which transmission you have first.

Looking at the transmission pan shape can tell you which transmission you have:

Right - Throttle cable broken it would just sit at idle. That was available when I looked but not the other for the trans if so at all so check the pan to know shown above which trans it has.

That or look right at it. Memory only the throttle on top and the kickdown or TV cable on bottom moves in opposite direction. It's more common that it fell off but old enough for anything possible. Possibly a dealer part but know exactly what you are after and don't forget any plastic clip things I think used at carb end. Might be a ball and clip made of metal too?

(edit)

Keep in mind that has to come off to remove carb for any reason so could have broken from that if it has that at all,

Glad it's fixed and seems like a pretty easy repair. Closed as solved to keep spammers out. YOU can have it opened by any moderator upon request if you wish,
