2010 Kia Sedona

Hi I have a 2010 Kia Sedona the shifter will not shift out of park. I push down on the brake with the engine running and the release button will not push in and the shifter will not move.
Any help will be most appreciated.

Stoplight switch would be my first check if only visually there and in proper place. Then see if power is there and goes thru it if all looks OK. Should be right down at arm of brake pedal,

The fuses would be my first check.

Okay I have power to the stoplight switch but no brake lights and not able to move shifter. Will replacing switch correct these issues?

Apparently there is a recall for the switch. I guess I should have called them first but I have an aversion to dealerships. Thanks to all that responded I appreciate the help.

Slow down for a minute. You have power to the switch you said -right? Now see if you can push the small plunger/button and make brake lights work, hence it will then shift out of park.
Sorry, no first hand experience on this car but might be as silly as a rubber bumper or it lost all adjustment such that it doesn't recognize the pedal is being pushed?? Look for that as it's a bit new for wild other issues IMO and the switch itself should really last longer than that so check it physically that it moves like you would expect - basic like a plain door jam switch (not all vehicles) that knows a door is open such that lights come on,

If there is a recall, just go ahead and let them deal with it. If you break something trying to fix it, they may refuse to fix the problem.

Sounds like you are going to be fine and a fast fix. Switch is just allowing current from one side to the other such that both brake lights work and the shifter lock knows you have you foot on brake as well at the same time. If and sounds like it with recall just a switch fix please say so for archives,

Thanks. Just FYI on this problem and it is of course. Find out as some vehicles will have a slot to put a key (about any) in that will allow you to start it in Neutral OR some if you just turn key towards plain "run" mode shifter will move. I can't know all possible tricks each model of everything might have for an emergency and forcing the shifter isn't a good choice!
Owner's manual may say for just this situation if only to get out of the way with the vehicle!

You should have an over ride button or slot near the shifter to bypass that lock. If not try this..... Turn the key one click to the position where the wheel is not locked but the key is no fully on yet then see if it will shift out of Park. If so, put it in neutral and start it from that position.
