This site's transmission expert should be by sooner or later. I'll just suggest you check or have it checked, transmission fluid level and color. Use a clean white paper or towel to see the real color of it.

Slipping if really so is not such great news as described. Dark fluid color and even a burnt odor isn't very good either.

If just level is low fill it but follow exact procedures for this spelled out in owner's manuals.

As for lights dimming while revving up that high I'm not so sure but would make sure belt(s) are properly tensioned if too loose are beyond limits of adjustment and time to go for new AND check out charging system while you are at it. Several chain parts outlets will do that for you if you don't know how just FYI.

Hang on for Gary gsferraro here is the expert would ask those questions probably first also?

Thank you. I'll be sure to check on your suggestions, & watch for Gary. Are there any days/times he's most likely to be online or should I just check occasionally?

He's always up to his neck in transmission full time + some but GOOD as it gets.
Magnus - if you find burned fluid it's really a sign you are in trouble. If low it's where did it leak out? If you can't do this stuff see if you can find help just for that plus check belt(s) are in range to stay tight enough is probably why lights dim.

That might have been some source of the problem lower voltage to make trans work properly? They slip from wear or pressure by an internal pump isn't up to spec pressure wise.

Those are tests a shop specializing in trans work would do more often than not and not all shops take on full transmission work take up space and time.

Add to all this a rush week, lots of folks time off makes it the worst possible time to need anything fixed or fast.

So do and test what I said if confused (easy - transmissions and an hydraulic machine of their own specialty) - what I mentioned are warnings of serious troubles very well may require both repair and an overhaul?? Can't know yet.

Minimize making it worse. IF those things listed are NOT right and you can't do anything about it quit using this car it's just making it worse. Tough if you had plans and this the vehicle I can't help that,

Hello,
ok, when you say the lights dim, maybe the first thing to do is to check your charging system or battery, if you do not have the correct voltage going to the trans it will not work correctly. sorry for late response, my shop is beyond busy and i do all the rebuilding. Gary

That's ok. I understand you're busy. The mechanic we just talked to said he thinks the battery cables are draining the battery so we should get them & the battery replaced & hopefully that will solve the problem.

The battery cables cannot drain the battery and if they are in fact causing the low voltage, that would mean the battery itself is not the problem so I'd be a little wary of these guys and their diagnosis.
Depending how old the battery is, it could be due for change anyway.

They just tightened up the bolt on one side of the battery & jump-started it & so far it's been working.
