My wife's vehicle started having some issues recently. Did what I could but it wasn't anything I was qualified to handle. Took it into a shop some friends recommended. They did whatever external diagnostics they could and said that they would have to remove the transmission and open it to see what the problem actually is. They said that the price would average between 1500-1700, but could go higher if they had to rebuild it (around 2200). They also said they would remove and diagnose it for free as well, but that they would charge to install it again even if I had no work done. (I could always just tow it home if the price is ridiculous I guess). I'm trying to figure out of it's worth the money. Could she get another 100,000 miles out of the engine if the transmission is fixed or does that seem like wishful thinking?

Can you get another vehicle for the cost of the trans work? Another 100K out of that engine? Hard to say that. Usually most cars I know of with very high miles it's dumb things that tick you off like seats springing, carpets worn gone, hinges, rubber on doors, hatches and latches all worn and so on just gets annoying. If nothing else what could you get for it if you did nothing now and what could you buy to replace it if used with some unknowns too so a gamble. If vehicle is good overall I'd say keep it. Check out the price of a new one would help make up your mind! T

I asked him twice. I think it's because I'd be basically SOL if I said no. It's not like I really have any choices after it's out.

Not only you would be SOL, but he would be too from all that lost labor and diag time. If he is going to pull it down and tear into, might as well overhaul it anyway. eh? Hard to say if that vehicle would make it to 300K without any other major issues. What does your mechanic say about it? Does he think the vehicle is worth fixing? Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

I'd have to ask him. He doesn't do transmissions so I had to go somewhere else. We've been the only owners. We've had regular maintenance done. And (knock on wood) this is the first big problem we've ever had with it.

Hello, The transmission in your car is called a CD4E, the problem is a broken band. The band breaks due to high pressure, the regulator valve bore wears out in the valvebody causing high pressure. If you decide to fix this trans, i would install a transgo shift kit, that fixes this problem. Gary
