Hello All,

I need to replace the transmission on my 2006 XC90 v8, with about 140k miles. Would you recommend using:

1. a general auto repair shop that specializes in Volvo (former dealer techs, Volvos are only loaner cars, 95% of all cars in the lot are Volvos), OR
2. a transmission specialist shop that works on all makes and models.

If you could please provide the reasons for your recommendation, that would be very helpful.

Thank you so much,
JPG.

Chances are the Volvo guy worked at a dealership but never worked on a transmission. The dealers have specialists for that.

The transmission shop would be more experienced with your trans. Just make sure you choose a reputable one. CHECK REFERENCES!

Dear Sir Paul "Hammer Time" McCartney,

Thanks so much for your advice. It makes total sense, and I'm definitely going to follow it.

Finding a reputable business - for anything - is really tough. There's tons of information out there (online reviews, BBB, ratings, etc.). However, both negative and positive feedback can be bought, or given without it being true. This is the part that causes me the most stress.

BTW, even though I had enabled "Send e-mail notification on reply", and my profile has "Send reply notification checked by default" selected, I never received an email notification in my inbox. This is why I'm only seeing this message just today.

Yes, we have issues with notifications from time to time.

Make sure it's not in your spam folder.
